What is Alpha?

  • Alpha is a ten-week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith for our lives today.
  • Alpha is a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity with lots of opportunity for debate and discussion. No question is too simple or too hostile.
  • Alpha is informal, friendly and non-pressured. All churches provide the same material, making alterations only to suit the local culture. Church leaders from all denominations report the astonishing impact the course has on non-churchgoers and existing Christians alike. And it's spreading fast to many secular locations - prisons, university campuses, businesses and schools.
  • Alpha is enjoyed and appreciated as much by those who have never set foot in a church as it is by those who once attended as well as by the regular churchgoer.
Alpha brings people together over a light meal and a talk on topics such as "Who is Jesus?", "Why Did Jesus Die?", "How Can I be Sure of My Faith?", and "Does God Heal Today?", followed by small group discussion on the topic presented. There is an optional overnight retreat midway through the course, which focuses on the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
  • Alpha has spread around the world and has been translated into 45+ different languages including Braille. Approximately 8,000,000 people have taken the Alpha course. There are over 8000 Alpha courses running in the US alone and over 1,500,000 Americans have already participated.
  • Alpha originated at Holy Trinity Brompton - an Anglican church in London, England over twenty-five years ago. Churches of every different type and background, including Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Non-Denominational, and Roman Catholic are now running Alpha.
  • Alpha is being offered in over 25 parishes within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
