Eucharistic Adoration. What is it?

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is the adoration of Jesus Christ present in the Holy Eucharist. In the many Churches that have this adoration, the Eucharist is displayed in a special holder called a monstrance, and people come to pray and worship Jesus continually throughout the day and often the night. Christ’s great love for us was shown when he was crucified on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and give us eternal life. He loves us without limit, and offers Himself to us in the Holy sacrament of the Eucharist. Can we not give Jesus a few minutes of love and adoration in return?

How does one spend an hour before Jesus exposed in the Blessed Sacrament?
 

This hour Jesus wants you to spend with Him is spent any way you want. You may bring your own prayer books, use the books in the chapel, read the Bible, pray the Rosary, or just sit, relax and enjoy the sweet peace that comes from simply being in the Presence of God.  You may feel you can’t pray well. Don’t let this discourage you. The mere fact that you take time out at a specific time each week to spend an hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament pleases Him very much, and is in itself a prayer of great faith.

What Adoration Means To Me
 

As a child and attending Catholic schools for twelve years, I was aware of the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament. I would slip into church as often as possible. My friendship with Jesus began at an early age. However, through the years, my time was devoted to raising a family and my contact with the Blessed Sacrament was obscure. I attended prayer meetings weekly, choir practice and, of course, Sunday Masses. The friendship was there, but needed stimulation.

When Perpetual Adoration was first introduced to SS. Simon and Jude Parish, I was thrilled. However, I wasn’t ready to commit myself to yet another “activity” in my life. I decided NOT to volunteer for a specific hour of devotion. Instead, I would just go to chapel whenever I was moved……..not always each week. After a year, I was so inspired with the time I spent with Jesus in Adoration that I actually looked forward to that special time when we could be together. I finally signed up for my hour each week and it has made a huge difference in my life. Now, nothing separates me from visiting my friend on a weekly basis.

The commitment each week, isn’t really a commitment at all. I don’t feel obligated, but I anticipate our meeting. I know that I have a special and memorable hour each week to spend with Jesus……….just the two of us. When writing my name in that book provided at the entrance of the chapel, I can imagine at the end of my life, Jesus opening the “Book of Life” and finding my name easily and often……that we were really good friends.

Our parish is so blessed to have this opportunity for Perpetual Adoration.  If you cannot commit to an hour every week yourself, you may want to consider choosing a day/night that you can share with a fellow parishioner or friend and alternate weeks with 2, 3, or 4 people.  Invite family members to come with you, or alternate with you or take a specific time themselves.  If you are really busy during day and evening hours, you may want to consider taking an hour during the wee hours of the day (12 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. on Sunday and Monday nights).
